SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Five animal rights activists are facing decades in prison over allegations they took piglets from a farm in southern Utah. The Utah Attorney's General office filed charges against members of California-based Direct Action Everywhere Monday accusing them of stealing two 3-week-old pigs from a Smithfield Foods barn. Activists released a video of the incident that investigators say they used to identify the men. An organization co-founder said prosecutors are trying to intimidate activists.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Medical-marijuana supporters in Utah are pushing back in court against opponents trying to block them from the ballot by citing federal drug law. The Utah Patients Coalition said in court documents Monday that its put substantial time and money into the complicated process of gathering enough signatures to make the ballot and should be able to defend their initiative in court. The group wants to intervene in a lawsuit filed against the state.
OGDEN, Utah (AP) — A national police expert says evidence room problems illustrated by the case of a Utah technician who was fired after being found high on methamphetamine at work are all too common. The Standard-Examiner reported Sunday that Joe Latta with the International Association for Property and Evidence says methamphetamine and pills have been a serious problem in recent years. He says it's unfortunate that police property-room issues are overlooked until they become a problem.
OGDEN, Utah (AP) — Officials say a Salt Lake City-bound Southwest flight made an emergency landing in northern Utah after a pregnant woman passed out. Ogden-Hinckley Airport manager Jon Greiner told the Standard-Examiner the flight coming from San Jose, California was in a holding pattern for nearly an hour due to bad weather when she lost consciousness on Sunday afternoon. Greiner says the crew landed in Ogden so she could get medical attention. She is expected to make a full recovery.
