NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) — APOEL Nicosia has won its sixth consecutive Cyprus championship after beating Anorthosis Famagusta 2-1 at home.

APOEL left it to its final match of the season on Saturday to clinch a record-extending 27th championship.

Second-placed Apollon Limassol plays its last match on Sunday but was four points behind. Apollon blew a chance to take the championship when it lost to APOEL 2-1 two weeks ago.

In a nail-biting finish for APOEL, striker Mickael Pote provided the winning goal in the 88th minute when he latched onto a pass from Guilherme Dellatorre to tuck the ball into the Anorthosis net.

It wasn't the easiest run this season for Cyprus' most successful team, which struggled with consistency. The team also replaced its coach with just seven matches to go and trailing Apollon on points.
