ELKO, Nev. (AP) — The National Weather Service in Elko has issued a special weather statement after a phenomena known as "cold core" funnel clouds touched down in north-central Nevada.
The service says the funnel clouds develop in weak thunderstorms and showers.
One briefly touched down around noon Friday just south of U.S. Interstate 80 between Valmy and Lone Mountain Mine in southeast Humboldt County. Another was spotted near U.S. Highway 95 between Paradise Valley and Winnemucca.
No damage was reported.
The service says the funnels rarely reach the ground but when they do they can turn into a weak tornado.
Meanwhile, a winter weather advisory is in effect from 9 p.m. Friday until 9 a.m. Saturday for White Pine County, where 3 to 7 inches of snow is expected at Great Basin National Park along the Utah line.
