BOSTON (AP) — A firefighter standing on a telescoping ladder when it collapsed onto a three-story building in Boston has escaped unhurt.

Boston Fire Commissioner Joseph Finn says the firefighter was suspended about 2 feet above the building Wednesday night when the ladder buckled. The firefighter was able to safely climb out of the ladder's bucket onto the roof.

Finn says it's too early to know the cause of what he described as a "catastrophic failure" of the ladder truck.

He says the truck was a backup being used while another truck was repaired. It is about 13 years old, but the commissioner says it has had extensive maintenance.

A crane was brought in to lower the ladder to street level early Thursday.
