DETROIT (AP) — Authorities say a Detroit man who fatally shot a woman while trying to stop a dog that was attacking her has been charged.

The Wayne County prosecutor's office says 61-year-old Michael Lewis Williams is charged with careless discharge of a weapon causing injury or death and is expected to be arraigned Friday.

Fifty-five-year-old Patricia Cosby was being mauled by a stray dog on a Detroit street in October when she was shot. The dog ran away.

Prosecutors said Thursday that Williams chased the dog and fired two more shots and returned to find Cosby had been wounded.

Police have said the man who fired the shot had a license to carry a concealed weapon.

Court documents did not list an attorney for Williams.
