ELY, Nev. (AP) — Two Wisconsin men who illegally poached a bull elk near the Nevada-Utah line have been sentenced to 10 days in jail and ordered to pay thousands of dollars in fines and penalties.
Nevada wildlife officials say Ed Singler of Shiocton, Wisconsin had a valid hunting tag for the area. But the elk killed in White Pine County in 2015 was actually shot by his son, Ryan Singler of New London, Wisconsin.
The two claimed the father fired the shot but eventually pleaded guilty to gross misdemeanors.
Wisconsin conservation officers brought the violation to the attention of Nevada game wardens.
A White Pine County judge suspended 270-day jail sentences for each in Ely, but fined the son $2,000 and the father $1,000. They each also have to pay $6,000 civil penalties and do 40 hours community service in Wisconsin
