Richard Serra's five compositions made of naturally oxidized, forged or hot-rolled steel are spectacularly massive.
One of the most prominent living U.S. artists, Serra had a 1986 retrospective at New York's Museum of Modern Art and received a lifetime-achievement award at the Venice Biennale in 2001.
Gagosian gallery offers Serra's recent musings on weight (all but one were created in 2006). They come across as poetic; the scale of the shapes whether round and tall or spread out as human-size hedges dictate the slow, meditative pace of the viewing.
Part of the experience comes from noticing how every step alters what you see from standing in the middle of these ancient-looking masses, to peeking over their edges, to coming up so close that their irregular bluish or rusty erosions resemble abstract painting.
