DAVIDSON, N.C. (AP) — Peyton Aldridge scored a career-high 38 points and grabbed 14 rebounds and Davidson held off Massachusetts for an 83-78 win Saturday night.
Aldridge— a rebound shy of tying his career best — traded 3-pointers with Luwane Pipkins and the score was knotted at 47 with 13:59 left before Davidson proceeded to outscore the Minutemen 21-8 over the next 6½ minutes for a 13-point cushion. Kellan Grady, KiShawn Pritchett and Jon Axel Gudmundsson buried 3s during that span.
UMass responded with a 23-15 outburst at the end and closed to 82-78 with five seconds left with back-to-back 3s from Pipkins before Aldridge sank 1 of 2 foul shots to end it.
Davidson (15-10, 10-4 Atlantic 10) shot 27 of 49 (55 percent) and got 12 points from Grady and 11 points from Will Magarity.
Pipkins led UMass (11-16, 4-10) with 31 points, Malik Hines, 17 and Carl Pierre scored 15.
