NAMPA, Idaho (AP) — A southwestern Idaho man who broke into his estranged wife's home and fatally shot another man has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and assault on a law enforcement officer.
KTVB-TV reports that 39-year-old Phillip Cabrera of Meridian pleaded guilty Wednesday in 3rd District Court as part of a deal that eliminated the death penalty.
Police say Cabrera in April broke down the front door of his estranged wife's home in Nampa and fatally shot 34-year-old Andrew L. Shepard of Caldwell. Authorities say Shepard was shot in the head and torso.
Authorities say Cabrera's estranged wife and their two young children were also in the home but were not injured.
Authorities say Cabrera pointed a gun at a police officer and fired several shots out the front door.
Cabrera is scheduled to be sentenced June 4.
