ST. GEORGE — Hobbs Nyberg scored three touchdowns, and second-ranked Dixie High held off a late rally attempt to defeat Desert Hills 36-21 Wednesday night and clinch the Region 9 title in Class 4A high school football.
Nyberg’s second touchdown, a 14-yard reception from quarterback Jacob Barben, helped the Flyers to a 22-7 lead after three quarters.
Noah Sewell tried to rally the Thunder, scampering in on a 24-yard touchdown run with just over five minutes remaining to pull within 36-14.
After Desert Hills recovered the onside kick, Sewell plunged in for another short touchdown to make it a two-touchdown game. But that was as close as the Thunder would get.
With the win, Dixie improves to 4-0 in Region 9 play. The Flyers (8-1) clinched an outright region title and a top seed in the playoffs with Cedar’s loss to Pine View on Wednesday.
Pine View 17, Cedar 3
At Cedar, Matungi Mating and Dallin Brown each rushed for a touchdown, and the Panthers (6-3, 2-2 Region 9) pitched a second-half defensive shutout to pull away from the Redmen.
Zane Montgomery’s 22-yard field goal in the second quarter accounted for all of the scoring by Cedar (4-4, 3-2).
Snow Canyon 41, Hurricane 14
At Hurricane, Toshfatafehi Wright ran for 71 yards and three touchdowns on seven carries, and Austin Staheli threw for 240 yards and a score to help the Warriors roll by Hurricane in the final Region 9 game of the night.
Austin Anderson’s 6-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter gave Snow Canyon a 41-0 lead.
Jaron Cordova and Tyler Moore each ran for a touchdown to lead Hurricane.
