MOAPA, Nevada — Four people are in police custody Sunday night after a three-car crash near Moapa left one person dead and three others injured.
Shortly before 4 p.m., a Jeep and a BMW were southbound on I-15, according to Nevada Highway Patrol trooper Chelsea Stuenkel. The driver of the Jeep attempted to pass the BMW on the left shoulder of the road, lost control and struck the side of the BMW. It then crossed the median into oncoming traffic in the northbound lanes, and crashed into a Mini Cooper that was traveling north.
The driver of the Mini Cooper died at the scene, Stuenkel said.
Shortly afterward, a second crash occurred when a Nissan Pathfinder hit a large amount of debris in the northbound lanes that was on the road from the earlier accident. Two people from the Nissan and one person from the Jeep were transported to an area hospital, Stuenkel said. She did not release any information about the extent of their injuries.
Officials have not yet identified the deceased driver.
Reckless driving and road rage are being considered as possible factors in the crash, but the official cause remains under investigation, Stuenkel said.
Officials did not release details about the four people in police custody.
