PROVO, Utah (Aug. 31, 2006) - Head men's volleyball coach Tom Peterson today announced he will resign his position at BYU effective immediately.
"I am grateful for the opportunity I have been given to serve as the head men's volleyball coach at BYU for the past four seasons," Peterson said. "I express my appreciation to my assistant coaches, staff and players, and for the great fans at BYU."
Peterson came to BYU following the retirement of legendary coach Carl McGown in 2002. He led the Cougars to a national runner-up finish in 2003 with a 23-7 record and went on to win the National Championship in 2004, posting a 29-4 mark. Peterson registered a 90-30 (.750) record over four seasons at BYU.
"We appreciate Tom's service to the athletics department over the past four years," BYU Athletics Director Tom Holmoe said. "He has experienced success on the court in his time here. We appreciate his concern for the program and wish him all the best in the future."
Holmoe said assistant coaches Shawn Patchell and Ryan Millar will be elevated to co-head coaches on an interim basis until a search for a new head coach can be properly administered.
"This will be a unique experience for Shawn and Ryan," Holmoe said. "We have confidence in their ability to run the program during this transition. We anticipate Shawn and Ryan will run the team throughout the entire 2007 season, giving us time to prepare for and conduct a thorough search for a new head coach."
Patchell enters his fifth season as a member of the coaching staff; while Millar, a two-time Olympian, begins his first season on the staff.
