This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.
Jane Connor and Sam Prigg have made their career out of cutting the news to pieces. No, they're not TV or news critics, but they do run a highly successful news clipping business.
Jane and Sam both have strong backgrounds in journalism and communications. In fact, they met while working for KBCI, the CBS affiliate in Boise, Idaho. They moved to Salt Lake City when Sam was offered a position as a news photographer for KSL-TV. At KSL, Sam sat through many meetings where he heard discussions about requests from the general public for copies of news broadcasts. He got the idea that he and Jane should start a TV news clipping business. With the full blessing of KSL, Sam and Jane launched Utah News Clips in 1986.
Jane tells me Utah News Clips is primarily a television news clipping service. The company monitors and records all local and national news from Salt Lake City TV news stations on a 24-hour basis. One of the first things Utah News Clips does each morning is send clients an e-mail with a complete listing of all the news stories that ran the previous evening, with emphasis on the subjects the client is most interested in.
Technology has sped things up and simplified the process for Jane and Sam. Many times clients want or need news clips shortly after they air. Because Utah News Clips uses DVD Recorders and massive hard drives to record the initial newscasts, the business is equipped to deliver clips to clients within almost moments of the broadcast. The digital files can also be transmitted over the Internet. In addition, the company has a preview service where a client can watch a news clip on their computer before purchasing it.
Jane attributes the success of Utah News Clips to her staff and the professionalism the company is known for. When news breaks, the company has to respond just as quickly. It's impossible for one person to keep abreast of all the news around or about them, so Utah News Clips does it for them.
For Zions Bank, I'm Fred Ball. I'm speaking on business.
