(KSL News) -- A biotech firm just got the first government approval to spray viruses on our food.

But these viruses - called bacteriophages -make food SAFER to eatby killing deadly bacteria.

Scientists say the viruses are already on our food, our environment - even in our stomachs.

Alexander Sulakvelidze / Intralytix chief scientist :36-:39) "Those are naturally-occurring viruses. They are everywhere. It is something that we've been eating since we were born."

The firm sold the virus to an unnamed major food manufacturer.

Lunchmeats sprayed with the virus should get to store shelves within six months. They'll be labeled.
