SALT LAKE CITY — The University of Utah basketball program added a big-time shooting guard out of California Thursday.
Devante Doutrive, a 6-foot-5, 190-pound shooting guard, from Woodland Hills, California, committed to Utah Thursday and intends to redshirt the 2017-18 season. The incoming freshman spurned offers from Arizona State, Gonzaga, Oregon, and UTEP to sign with the Runnin’ Utes.
“We are excited to welcome Devante to our basketball program,” head coach Larry Krystkowiak said in a statement. “He is very athletic and has a great knack for putting points on the board. He is also a tremendous passer and will fit into our system quite well.”
Doutrive is ranked the 67th-best overall player and 13th-best shooting guard in the 2017 class, according to scout.com. At Birmingham High School, Doutrive averaged 22.3 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. He helped lead his team to a state championship title his senior season.
The athletic shooting guard was named the John R. Wooden/High School Player of the Year award in the CIF Los Angeles City Section. Doutrive uses his size to be an aggressive scorer and is capable of creating his own shot. On the defensive side of the ball, Doutrive is relentless and pursues the ball with aggression.
With the addition of Doutrive, the 2017-18 roster is full and the coaching staff can turn its attention to the season and recruiting for the 2018 season. Utah has already received commitments from three-star shooting guard Naseem Gaskin from Oakland, California and point guard Charles Jones from Rogerson, Idaho.
Utah kicks off its season with an exhibition contest on Wednesday, Nov. 1 against Montana Tech and its first official game on Friday, Nov. 10 against Prairie View A&M. The Utes will hold its annual Night with the Runnin’ Utes on Tuesday, Oct. 17 at the Huntsman Center.
