PITTSBURGH (AP) — Matt Carpenter broke open the St. Louis Cardinals' 11-8 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates with a three-run home run. With the Cardinals leading 2-1 and two outs in the second inning, Carpenter sent his homer over the center field wall to extend the lead to 5-1. It was the second of three St. Louis home runs in the first three innings.
BOSTON (AP) — Pinch-hitter Mitch Moreland hit a two-run single in Boston's four-run seventh inning and the Red Sox rallied to beat the New York Yankees 9-6 on Friday night. Boston won for the 13th time in 15 games to extend its lead in the AL East to five games over the second-place Yankees. New York snapped a four-game winning streak.
DETROIT (AP) — Chris Taylor had four hits including a pair of doubles, and the Los Angeles Dodgers welcomed Adrian Gonzalez back from the disabled list with another victory, beating the Detroit Tigers 8-5. Gonzalez doubled in his first plate appearance since June 11, one of six two-base hits on the night for Los Angeles.
HOUSTON (AP) — Dallas Keuchel threw seven shutout innings, Alex Bregman and Jose Altuve homered and the Houston Astros beat the Oakland Athletics 3-1 on Friday night. Keuchel allowed three hits, walked one and struck out three in a dominant performance. Keuchel had his second straight solid outing after allowing one run in 6 2/3 innings Sunday at Texas. The 2015 AL Cy Young winner retired 14 of the first 15 batters he faced, with the lone hit being a bunt single by Matt Joyce.
SEATTLE (AP) — Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett sat during the national anthem for the second straight game of the preseason. Bennett was alone sitting on the Seahawks bench during the "Star-Spangled Banner" before Friday night's preseason game against Minnesota. His teammates showed support for Bennett. He says racial violence in Virginia solidified his resolve.
