VIENNA (AP) — An Austrian toddler died of heatstroke after he was left in a car for several hours during high temperatures, police said Thursday following an autopsy.
The 19-month-old boy was found by his 17-year-old mother and her 20-year old boyfriend Tuesday. A police statement cited the two as saying they left the child in the vehicle in the western city of Bludenz with temperatures at around 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit) because they did not want to wake him.
They found him unresponsive after they took an afternoon nap, realized the child was still in the car and returned to the vehicle in the early evening. Police said the infant died despite attempts by the 20-year old to resuscitate him.
Police had earlier said that if the toddler was found to have died because of the heat, his mother and her boyfriend face manslaughter charges.
