DYER, Ind. (AP) — The Latest on a police-involved shooting in northwestern Indiana (all times local):

6:15 p.m.

Authorities have identified a man fatally shot by officers after a police chase in south suburban Chicago.

The Lake County, Indiana, coroner's office evening identified the man as 33-year-old Mark P. Coffey of Chicago Heights, Illinois. It says he suffered gunshot wounds but didn't specify how he died.

The Crete, Illinois, police chief says his officers chased the suspected car thief into nearby Dyer, Indiana, early Thursday and he appeared to have a gun when the officers confronted him. Chief James Paoletti says the driver fled back into Illinois, where the car hit a pedestrian.

Authorities say the car returned to Dyer, where Coffey was shot by Indiana officers.

Authorities say the person fatally shot by officers after a police chase in south suburban Chicago was a 33-year-old white man.

A statement from the Lake County, Indiana, coroner's office Thursday afternoon didn't release the man's name or where he lived pending notification of his family. The office says the man suffered gunshot wounds but didn't specify how he died.

A suburban Chicago police chief says a suspected car thief appeared to have a gun when officers confronted him before he drove away in a chase that ended later when the suspect was shot to death in northwestern Indiana.

Crete, Illinois, Police Chief James Paoletti says his officers chased the car early Thursday to a church parking lot in nearby Dyer, Indiana, where the suspect acted as if he was going to shoot the officers. Paoletti tells The Associated Press the driver went back into Illinois where the car hit a pedestrian.

Authorities say the car returned to Dyer, where the suspect was shot by Indiana officers. Indiana State Police spokesman Master Trooper Glen Fifield says he couldn't immediately confirm whether the person shot was armed or what prompted officers to open fire.

Ben Dykstra tells WLS-TV his car was side-swiped by the fleeing car. He says officers were trying to break the car's windows before shots were fired.

Authorities say a suspected car thief hit a pedestrian during a police chase in south suburban Chicago that ended in northwestern Indiana where the suspect was shot to death.

Lake County sheriff's department spokesman Mark Back says one person died in the shooting about 6 a.m. Thursday in Dyer, Indiana, about 30 miles (50 kilometers) south of downtown Chicago.

Sheriff's Deputy Chief Dan Murchek says the chase began in Illinois and that Indiana State Police will investigate the shooting. He provided no other details.

Sauk Village, Illinois, police chief Robert Kowalski says officers were chasing a suspected stolen car when it hit the pedestrian. He says that person was taken to a hospital but provided no details on the pedestrian's condition.

Lake County sheriff's department spokesman Mark Back says the shooting happened about 6 a.m. Thursday in the town of Dyer, Indiana, about 30 miles (50 kilometers) south of Chicago.

Chicago television stations are reporting that the shooting happened in Indiana following a police chase that started in suburbs south of Chicago. Back says he can't confirm those details.

Television helicopter video shows the windows on the car's passenger side broken, with the car partly off the street.

Back says he doesn't yet have details about the circumstances of the shooting.

Calls to other police agencies weren't immediately returned.
