CHICAGO (AP) — Two-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer and Gio Gonzalez will miss their scheduled starts for the Washington Nationals against the Chicago Cubs this weekend. Manager Dusty Baker decided to give Scherzer at least an extra day rather than have him pitch Sunday after the right-hander exited Tuesday's game against Florida because of neck spasms. Gonzalez won't pitch Saturday with his wife expected to give birth to their second child in the next few days.

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs have placed shortstop Addison Russell on the 10-day disabled list because of a strained right foot. The Cubs announced the move before today's game against NL East-leading Washington. Chicago also called up left-handed pitcher Rob Zastryzny (zuh-STRIZ'-nee) from Triple-A Iowa. He made one appearance for the Cubs in May and pitched in eight games for them last season.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Tom Brady says he prefers to keep any medical issues in his past private, including whether he had a concussion last season. In his first comments since the Patriots opened training camp, Brady said he "isn't blind" to issues such as CTE, but remains confident in how he tries to avoid injury. Brady's wife, Gisele Bundchen, told CBS in May that Brady played through a concussion on his way to a fifth Super Bowl title. The quarterback turned 40 yesterday.

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — The San Antonio Spurs have re-signed reserve guard Patty Mills, who shot 41 percent from 3-point range last season. The Spurs announced the deal today, but didn't disclose details of the contract. Mills has spent the past six seasons with the Spurs. He averaged 9.5 points and a career-best 3.5 assists last season. Mills also made 147 3-pointers during his career-high 21.9 minutes per game.

NEW YORK (AP) — Defending champion Stan Wawrinka (vah-VRINK'-ah) has pulled out of the U.S. Open with an injured knee. The three-time major champion says he will sit out the rest of 2017 because of the knee. He joins the man he beat in last year's final at Flushing Meadows, Novak Djokovic (NOH'-vak JOH'-kuh-vich), in calling it quits for this season because of injury.
