SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah state commission is recommending preserving the name of Utah's Negro Bill Canyon after it received conflicting views on whether the name is offensive. The recommendation goes next to the U.S. Board on Geographic Names, which will make a decision on the name. The recommendation follows the advice of the NAACP which argued that the name is not offensive and honors a black cowboy. The Utah Martin Luther King Jr. Commission called the word negro a "racially offensive descriptor."

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The recaptured leader of a polygamous sect accused of running a Utah and Arizona food stamp fraud scheme has won one-month delay for his trial so his lawyers can try to determine if he suffered memory loss or brain damage in two late 1990s accidents. U.S. District Judge Ted Stewart approved an Oct. 23 trial date for Lyle Jeffs, pushing it back from Sept. 18. Jeffs' lawyer Kathryn Nester has said he suffered head injuries in 1997 when he fell at a construction site and in a 1998 car accident.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Police say lightning struck three girls at mountain lake in eastern Utah, critically injuring two. Authorities said the girls aged 2, 7 and 8 were at Lily Lake near the Wyoming border when they were struck Friday afternoon.

SILVERTON, Colo. (AP) — The head of the Environmental Protection Agency toured the site of an old Colorado gold mine where the agency inadvertently triggered a spill of 3 million gallons of tainted wastewater. EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt had promised to visit the site during his confirmation hearing and came to see the mine Friday along with Colorado lawmakers on the eve of the second anniversary of the disaster.
