SHERIDAN, Wyo. (AP) — The Wyoming Game and Fish Department says a cow elk in southeast Washakie County has been diagnosed with chronic wasting disease.
Agency spokesman Renny MacKay says the elk had been previously collared as part of the elk movement study that evaluated the migrations and behaviors of elk in the Bighorn Mountains.
Sheridan wildlife management coordinator Dan Thiele says chronic wasting disease has been documented in most deer hunt areas in the eastern part of the state but has a low prevalence rate in the Sheridan area.
The Sheridan Press reports (http://bit.ly/2tSTR0e ) that game officials say the disease has been in Wyoming for about 30 years.
