SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Salt Lake City's fire department is limiting where those celebrating Utah's July 24 Pioneer Day can shoot off fireworks in the Capitol.
The fire department says dry conditions around the city have increased the risk of fires in one of the driest summers on record.
Chief Fire Marshal Ryan Mellor says there were as many fires between July 1 and July 11 as there were in the entire month of June.
Fireworks are legal to shoot around Pioneer Day, between July 21 and July 27, but the city says it's restricting fireworks in areas outside the city's heavily developed core: East of 900 East, west of Redwood Road and north of South Temple.
