The next few days in Salt Lake City will be eventful.
The American Legion is in town for its annual convention. As a result, leading members of the Bush Administration, including the Secretary of State, the Secretary of Defense, even the President himself, are scheduled to appear.
Not surprisingly, some in the community and beyond intend to use the occasion to take issue with the President and his associates, while others plan counter demonstrations of support.
Americans, including Utahns, should not fear divergent views. Such voices have been bellowing since the beginning of this nation. The free expression of ideas is at the very foundation of democracy, and if democracy is what the United States is desirous of promoting throughout the world, Americans should not be afraid of vigorously engaging in public debate here at home.
While KSL is disappointed in Mayor Rocky Anderson's choice of places to be during the visit of our nation's Chief Executive, we acknowledge his right to make that decision, however boorish it might be.
Regardless, in times such as these, and in a nation such as this, various viewpoints need to be expressed. So, KSL says let the debate during the next few days proceed, and let it go forth in a spirit of civility, without insolence or physical confrontation.
