PARIS (AP) — Venus Williams has reached the fourth round of the French Open by beating an opponent who is 15 years younger than she is. Williams, who turns 37 this month, didn't get much of a test during a 6-3, 6-1 victory over 60th-ranked Elise Mertens of Belgium that lasted just over an hour. The 21-year-old Mertens was playing in only her second Grand Slam tournament. Williams is a seven-time major champion and was the runner-up at the French Open in 2002. This is her record 20th appearance in the French Open.
DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) — Jason Dufner has shot his second straight 7-under 65 at the Memorial in Dublin, Ohio. That set the 36-hole record at Muirfield Village and gave him a six-shot lead over Ricki Fowler among today's early starters. Dufner's 14-under 130 is one better than the 36-hole score of Scott Hoch in 1987 and Fowler in 2010. Neither won the tournament.
NEW YORK (AP) — Former New York Knicks player Charles Oakley has chosen to go to trial in August on charges he struck a security guard at Madison Square Garden. Oakley appeared briefly before a Manhattan judge today. He rejected a conditional dismissal that would have left him with a clean record after six months of good behavior. Oakley became a fan favorite when he played for the Knicks from 1988 to 1998. But he's had a falling out with the organization in recent years.
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Three former Penn State officials are getting jail time for failing to report now-convicted sexual predator Jerry Sandusky to authorities. Former Penn State President Graham Spanier and former Vice President Gary Schultz will have to spend two months in jail. Former athletic director Tim Curley will spend three months in jail. The rest of their sentences will be served in house arrest.
UNDATED (AP) — Michael Vick apparently isn't ready to call it quits. The 36-year-old former NFL quarterback has signed with the American Flag Football League as both a player and adviser for the 7-on-7 league. Vick, who officially retired from the NFL in February, is expected to take part in a demonstration game June 27 at Avaya Stadium in San Jose, California. The AFFL's plan is to field eight league-owned teams in 2018.
