SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — San Francisco Giants reliever Hunter Strickland has received a six-game suspension and Washington's Bryce Harper four games for their roles in yesterday's benches-clearing brawl at AT&T Park. Each also has been fined an undisclosed amount. Both players plan to appeal. Strickland hit Harper in the hip with a pitch and the Washington slugger charged the mound, firing his helmet and trading punches to the head with Strickland.
TORONTO (AP) — A man suspected of throwing a beer can at a Baltimore outfielder during a playoff game in Toronto last fall has pleaded guilty to mischief. In an agreed statement of facts presented in court today, Ken Pagan admitted tossing a can of beer on the field as Orioles player Hyun Soo Kim was about to catch a fly ball during a game on Oct. 4. The can just missed him. The incident triggered a social media frenzy as people scanned photographs and video footage from the game to figure out where the can had come from.
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Police say Tiger Woods' car showed fresh damage on the driver's side when officers found him asleep at the wheel alongside a Florida road early yesterday. Incident reports released by Jupiter Police say Woods' Mercedes had blocked a bike lane and both tires on the driver's side were flat, with minor damage to the rims. There also was minor damage to the bumpers, and the passenger rear tail light was out. The reports say Woods' pupils were dilated and he had trouble keeping his eyes open as he struggled to follow instructions to show his driver's license, open his window and tie his shoes.
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings have signed five more draft picks, leaving second-round running back Dalvin Cook as their lone rookie without a contract. The Vikings also signed former Nebraska quarterback Tommy Armstrong, who will play safety after taking part in rookie minicamp on a tryout basis.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — UCLA is creating $1 million worth of scholarships in the name of Jackie Robinson for male athletes in the four sports the baseball Hall of Famer played while attending the school. The Jackie R. Robinson Centennial Scholars Endowed Scholarships will cover baseball, football, men's basketball and men's track and field. Robinson attended UCLA from 1939-41. Six years later, he broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball with the Brooklyn Dodgers.
