SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A new analysis of Utah public school disciplinary actions from 2012-2014 shows that Native American students were disciplined at much higher rates than kids of other ethnicities. The Salt Lake Tribune reports the numbers are based on a report by a Salt Lake City nonprofit and the University of Utah released Monday. During the 2013-2014 school year, Native American students had almost double the disciplinary rate for other students of color and about three times more than white students.
RIVERDALE, Utah (AP) — A Utah woman has been arrested after she allegedly locked her two young children in her car's trunk while she went inside a Wal-Mart store to shop. Riverdale police say witnesses heard the children ages 2 and 5 making noise and saw the car shaking, got the older child to pull the emergency latch and called 911.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Gov. Gary R. Herbert has appointed the director of the Utah Sentencing Commission to fill a judicial vacancy on the Second District Court for Weber, Morgan and Davis counties. Jennifer Valencia will fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Scott Hadley.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Nearly two dozen candidates are competing for the Utah congressional seat that U.S. Rep. Jason Chaffetz will soon vacate. State lawmakers and a mayor are among those expected to lead the packed field that met Friday's filing deadline for most candidates. Fifteen Republicans, four Democrats, one Libertarian and two independents are running.
