PROVO, Utah (Aug. 23, 2006)--In its final full-contact scrimmage of Fall Camp, both sides of the ball looked good as BYU worked on situational drills.

"I was pleased with the execution today with the exception of the defense's performance in one Blue Zone and one overtime drill," head coach Bronco Mendenhall said.

The Cougars will finish Fall Camp tomorrow with what Mendenhall calls a transitional practice before entering in-season practice protocol Friday.

Mendenhall said the health of his team is the most pleasing aspect of Fall Camp. Only three players are questionable due to injuries for the Arizona game.

After abbreviated position and special teams drills, the team started with several different situational drills. BYU worked on "going out," "going in," "third and short," two minute, Blue Zone and overtime drills.

The defense and offense switched off making plays. In the "going out" drill, where the offense starts at its own three-yard line, Terrance Hooks picked off a Jason Beck pass and ran 11 yards for a touchdown.

The offense came back in the "going in" (two yards from the goal line) and "third and short" drills, flexing its short-yardage muscles and converting a majority of its attempts.

The first-team offense was also efficient in Blue Zone drills. Fui Vakapuna had perhaps the highlight of the scrimmage when he had a spectacular 14-yard run to the one-yard line, which set up a touchdown on the next play. Vakapuna showcased speed, elusiveness and pure power in making several defenders miss.

In overtime drills, the defense held strong, forcing a missed field goal on the first drive before the first-team offense marched 25 yards on seven plays to score a touchdown on the second overtime drill drive. After a fumble that resulted in a 15-yard loss, John Beck hooked up with Zac Collie for a 25-yard gain on second and 25. Five plays later, Beck sneaked the ball into the end zone from inches out.

"Arizona work is next," Mendenhall said after the practice. "We will evaluate the film, make personnel decisions and transition into our in-season practice schedule."
