Aug. 23--"Women are into being pregnant right now," said Susan Luedtke, who owns The Stork's Nest of the Old Pueblo.
"Part of that is fueled by the media and celebrities like Angelina Jolie, but it is also fueled by the energy that surrounds women when they are pregnant," she said.
The Stork's Nest, 6825 E. Camino Principal, sells some maternity clothing, mostly from the Childish line, created by Skye Hoppus, a former MTV executive and wife of Mark Hoppus of the rock band Blink-182.
"I do feel stylish," said Cecilia Davenport, 32, who is 6 months pregnant with her first child.
Davenport likes the selection at the Stork's Nest, and she has driven to Phoenix to shop on occasion.
She also manages to keep costs down. "Maternity wear can be expensive, and I've been lucky since I'm petite and it is summer so I can just wear tank tops and shorts," she said.
"I just look for clothes that will be comfortable and cute for me to wear, but I have to stick to professional looks since I still work," said Kim Bourn, the director of development at the Zuckerman College of Public Health at the University of Arizona. Bourn, 39, is pregnant with her first child.
"The only place in town that I really buy maternity from is Mimi Maternity. Otherwise I have just resorted to buying from Chico's and Pour Moi," Bourn said. Chico's, a company that sells clothing designed just for the store, and Pour Moi, a locally owned women's boutique, appeal to Bourn's sense of style. Also, many of the pieces she buys use elastic.
