The Labor Department reported this morning that hiring bounced back in April and the unemployment rate dipped to a 10-year low of 4.4 percent. IBM is slumping after billionaire investor Warren Buffett said he sold about a third of his 81 million shares in the company.
DETROIT (AP) — The Justice Department is investigating allegations that Uber used phony software to thwart city efforts to make sure the ride-hailing company follows local regulations. The city of Portland, Oregon, says in an April audit report that it was notified of the inquiry by the U.S. Attorney's Office in San Francisco. Uber and the U.S. Attorney's Office wouldn't comment.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Sen. Dianne Feinstein (FYN'-styn) says the FBI paid $900,000 to break into an iPhone of one of the shooters in the 2015 San Bernardino terror attack that claimed 14 lives. The California Democrat publicly cited the amount while questioning FBI Director James Comey at a Senate Judiciary Committee oversight hearing Wednesday. The FBI for the last year has treated that figure as classified information and has not disclosed it. The bureau has also protected the identity of the vendor.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" has rocketed to a $17 million opening night. That beats the early showings of the first "Guardians" film, which made earned $11.2 million on its opening night. The sequel is the biggest opening night earner of the year so far. The sales estimate reported by Disney is for Thursday night preview screenings.
EASTON, Pa. (AP) — Crayola's new crayon color will be based on a blue pigment discovered in 2009. Scientists at Oregon State University accidentally discovered the brilliant blue when they were experimenting with materials that could be used in electronics. Crayola says it's partnering with Oregon State and The Shepherd Color Company, which licenses the pigment known as YInMn (yihn-mihn) blue. The new crayon color, to be named by the public, will replace dandelion later this year.
