WATERTOWN, N.Y., Aug 21, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- The Baptist minister in New York State who fired a Sunday school teacher because of her gender says women are not inferior, just different.
Mary Lambert, who has been a member of the First Baptist Church in Watertown for 60 years, was notified last week she could no longer teach in the church school because the Rev. Tim LaBouf had decided the Bible says women should not teach men. The letter was signed by LaBouf's wife, Kendra.
In a statement after a church board meeting Saturday, LaBouf said men and women have different qualifications, News 10 TV, Syracuse, N.Y., reported.
"These qualifications do not mean that one is superior or more important than another. It only means that God has a special plan for each of us in accomplishing his work within the church setting," he said.
LaBouf, a member of the Watertown City Council, said his beliefs on the roles of men and women in the church "stop at the church door."
