SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The mayor of Provo says he asked the city's police chief to resign because of a sexual assault complaint against him that prosecutors determined didn't warrant charges.
Mayor John Curtis said Thursday in a news conference that regardless of the validity of the allegation, Chief John King's reputation is tainted.
Curtis says the adult woman made the allegation to city officials in February. He says Salt Lake County prosecutors investigated but determined the information was "insufficient" to bring charges.
King said Tuesday he was resigning to devote more time to his family. King declined comment through police officials Wednesday when news of the allegation broke.
Attempts to reach him Thursday were unsuccessful.
Provo is home to the Mormon-church owned Brigham Young University.
King took the job in Provo in January 2014 after coming from Maryland.
