NEW YORK (AP) — Forecasters are warning that wind gusts of more than 35 mph and low visibility could extend from the Philadelphia area to Maine today. A nor'easter has begun pounding parts of the mid-Atlantic and the Northeast. Already, about 5,000 flights have been canceled. Amtrak has canceled or modified service up and down the Northeast Corridor and many schools are closed in New York City, Philadelphia, Boston and place in between.
CHICAGO (AP) — State police in Illinois say snowy weather conditions caused two vehicle pileups on a Chicago expressway that involved a total of 34 cars. State police say seven people sustained minor injuries in Monday night's pileups on the Kennedy Expressway. Police say the highway's express lanes were closed for hours. The National Weather Service issued a lake-effect snow warning for Chicago that expires this afternoon.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jurors in Los Angeles County are deliberating the fate of former LA County Sheriff Lee Baca, who's accused of helping obstruct a 2011 FBI investigation into guards who savagely beat inmates in his jails and lying about trying to obstruct the probe. Baca is now 74 and in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease. A jury in his first trial could not reach verdicts and a mistrial was declared in December.
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — A federal control board says Puerto Rico's government needs to cut its public pension system by 10 percent, furlough tens of thousands of its workers and eliminate Christmas bonuses if it cannot generate other types of savings. The U.S. territory has been in a nearly decade-long recession, and a seven-member board was created by Congress last year to oversee Puerto Rico's finances.
EVERETT, Wash. (AP) — The city of Everett, Washington, is suing drug maker Purdue Pharma, the maker of the opioid pain medication OxyContin. Everett officials accuse the drugmaker of knowingly allowing pills to be funneled into the black market and the city and doing nothing to stop it. Everett is asking for damages caused to the community.
