ST. PETERSBURG, Russia, Aug 17, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- The State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg recovered about one-tenth of the $4.9 million of its stolen artworks.
"Twenty-four stolen pieces have already been returned in the course of the investigation, of which nine were voluntarily returned by collections owners from Moscow and St. Petersburg," an official at the Russian Prosecutor General's Office told the Itar-Tass news agency.
The thefts were discovered during an inspection this past spring.
The husband and son of curator Larisa Zavadskaya and a lecturer at St. Petersburg State University are being held. One other person has been released during the investigation, Itar-Tass said.
