SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — President Barack Obama commuted the sentences of three Utah drug offenders in one of his final acts in office.
The Deseret News reports (http://bit.ly/2kb50EB ) that that Obama has granted 1,715 commutations during his eight years in office, many coming in the final months of his presidency.
Last week, he shortened the sentence of Tonya Barney, of Ivins, David Andrew Mortensen, of Salt Lake City, and Kim Davis Beckstrom, of Ogden. All three offenders were convicted of either distributing or intending to distribute methamphetamine. All three had their sentences shortened on the condition that they enroll in residential drug treatment.
