Cheatham key block late helps lift Akron over Miami (Ohio)

OXFORD, Ohio (AP) — Kwan Cheatham Jr. scored 14 points and blocked a key shot in the final seconds, and Akron beat Miami (Ohio) 74-70 on Saturday for its seventh straight win.

Michael Weathers made a pair of free throws to pull Miami to 73-70 with 21 seconds left. Logan McLane then forced a turnover, and had a chance to move the RedHawks within one, but Cheatham blocked his layup attempt with 10 seconds to go. Antino Jackson split a pair of free throws to seal it for the Zips (14-3, 4-0 Mid-American Conference).

Daniel Utomi made five 3-pointers and finished with 15 points for Akron.

McLane scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Miami (8-9, 1-3). Michael Weathers and Abdoulaye Harouna added 12 points apiece.

The game was tied at 66 with 2:25 remaining. Isaiah Johnson scored four points and Noah Robotham split a pair of free throws and the Zips led 71-66 with 1:23 left.
