UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The U.N. Security Council is set to vote Saturday on a Russian resolution that would endorse the latest cease-fire agreement in Syria and reiterate support for a roadmap to peace that starts with a transitional government. Russia and Turkey brokered the deal. The draft resolution also calls for "rapid, safe and unhindered" access to deliver humanitarian aid throughout the country.
MOSCOW (AP) — President Vladimir Putin is condemning a new round of U.S. sanctions against Russia but says Moscow will not retaliate by expelling American diplomats. President Barack Obama has imposed sanctions on Russian officials and intelligence services in retaliation for Russia's interference in the U.S. presidential election by hacking American political sites and email accounts. A total of 35 Russians were ordered to leave the U.S. and two facilities closed.
PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The most powerful nor'easter in nearly two years is creating havoc in northern New England. It generated heavy snow, powerful winds and even thunder and lightning, leaving tens of thousands of people in the dark Friday and burying some towns under 2 feet of snow. More than 100,000 homes and businesses in Maine were without power at one point. Residents have been warned that it could take days to restore service.
CLEVELAND (AP) — The Coast Guard is suspending search-and-rescue efforts for a plane that went missing over Lake Erie near Cleveland. There were six people onboard. Searchers used aircraft and a cutter to search a 128-square-mile area but found no sign of any debris or of the three adults and three children. The plane vanished from radar late Thursday. The Guard no longer expects to find anyone alive. The city will now begin recovery efforts.
NEW YORK (AP) — New York City firefighters are battling a blaze within a block-long row of storefronts in Queens. The Fire Department says about 180 firefighters have been called to the five-alarm fire in the Kew Gardens neighborhood. It was reported around 6:30 p.m. The FDNY says three firefighters have suffered non-life-threatening injuries, though one has more serious injuries than the others.
