WASHINGTON (AP) — A few Republican senators say they'll push for stronger sanctions against Russia than those imposed by President Barack Obama. Sens. John McCain of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina have released a statement saying they'll hold a hearing next week on "foreign cyber threats." McCain chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee. In Moscow, Russian leader Vladimir Putin said he won't kick out American diplomats in retaliation. A statement said Moscow will attempt to restore ties with "the administration of President D. Trump."
BERLIN (AP) — Chancellor Angela Merkel (AHN'-geh-lah MEHR'-kuhl) has told Germans in her New Year message that their country is stronger than terrorism and the government will do everything to ensure "security in freedom." Merkel said that 2016 had been "a year of severe tests," the toughest of them Islamic extremist terror. A truck attack in Berlin earlier this month killed 12.
PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Some residents of Maine could be without power into the new year. More than 100,000 homes and businesses were in the dark during the peak of a super-charged nor'easter that dumped more than 2 feet of snow in some areas. Some areas had thunderclaps and snow that fell at a rate of 6 inches per hour. Some communities that were spared had heavy rain. New Hampshire and Vermont were largely spared significant damage and power outages.
CLEVELAND (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard has been searching an area of Lake Erie about 2 miles out from the Cleveland lakeshore airport where the plane with six people aboard vanished after taking off last night. A flight-tracking service says it appears the plane rapidly lost altitude. It was flown by an executive with a Columbus based beverage distributor. Three children are among the six.
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry has raised $26,400 by auctioning off two pairs of sneakers for victims of this month's Oakland warehouse fire. The East Bay Times reports that one set of white sneakers Curry wore in the Warriors' Dec. 15 win over the New York Knicks sold for $17,100. The words "Oakland" and "Strong" are scrawled on the front and the words "Always" and "Remember" on the back. Curry had posted on Twitter to advertise the eBay auction.
