UNITED NATIONS (AP) — With less than a month left in office, the Obama administration has dealt Israel one of the strongest blows to come from the United States in recent years. Instead of vetoing a U.N. resolution condemning Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem today, the United States abstained -- allowing the resolution to be approved 14 to nothing. It's a move that could have a lasting impact on Israel -- possibly hurting its negotiating position in future peace talks. Amid widespread international opposition to the settlements, today's action may be impossible to reverse.

PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Donald Trump is vowing that when it comes to the United Nations -- and to U.S. relations with Israel -- things will be different after he takes office. Trump had called for a veto of today's U.N. resolution, after Israel turned to the president-elect for support. A year ago, Trump said he wanted to be "very neutral" on Israel-Palestinian issues. But his tone became decidedly more pro-Israel as the campaign progressed.

MILAN (AP) — There's relief in Germany, and across Europe, after the suspect in the Berlin Christmas market truck attack was shot and killed by police in Italy today. But the four-day run by Anis Amri is raising questions about whether he had any accomplices -- and about how Europe can stop extremists from moving freely across its open borders. Italian police say Amri traveled from Germany through France and into Italy, and at least some of his trip was by rail.

NEW YORK (AP) — Major U.S. stock indexes have managed to post tiny gains in a quiet day of pre-holiday trading. Health care stocks rose more than the rest of the market, while retailers and energy companies fell. The Dow rose 14 points. The S&P gained two points. The Nasdaq climbed 15 points. Markets will be closed Monday in observance of Christmas.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Police in Arkansas say Gary Holmes fired his gun into a car last week -- killing a 3-year-old boy -- because he thought the driver of that car had been following him too closely. Holmes turned himself in last night at police headquarters in Little Rock. He's being held without bail on preliminary charges including capital murder.
