SALT LAKE CITY — Jarred DuBois played for the Runnin’ Utes in the 2012-13 season when he spent his own money to buy and make lunches for the homeless denizens of Utah.

After graduation, he continued his efforts to feed the hungry with a nonprofit called “Everyone has a Story.”

DuBois and other current and former Utah athletes continued their tradition this week with the Lunch Bag Project. The idea is to make and give thousands of sack lunches to the homeless in downtown Salt Lake City, spreading holiday cheer and getting a glimpse into how the other half lives.

“I think it’s important that we take time out of our day, regardless of the holiday season or not, to do kind acts for other people,” said DuBois, who distributed 1,000 lunches Thursday afternoon. “I think a lot of times we get caught up in what we are doing and don’t take the time out to do something for other people."

DuBois transferred from Loyola-Marymount to Utah in 2012-13, when he pursued a master's degree in communications after scoring 1,193 career points for the Lions. He played professionally in Europe, most recently with Apoel in Cyprus.

“I just try to create an environment so people can have a good time, and help a cause behind it, too," he said.
