CASPER, Wyo. (AP) — Wyoming legislators are considering a bill that would require a judge's order for access to recordings from police vehicles and body cameras.
The Casper Star-Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/2hlcHCW ) that critics of the proposal say the video footage is public information and implementing such a rule would prevent transparency. They say taking the request to court could also be costly for members of the public and media seeking the footage.
The bill's proponents argue that police recordings don't always tell the full story and could portray someone in a false light.
The proposal, which is sponsored by the Joint Judiciary Committee, will go before lawmakers in the next legislative session, which starts Jan. 10.
Committee Chairman Sen. Leland Christensen says the legislation is still "far from a done deal."
