MONTREAL (CP) - Marie-Eve Pelletier of Repentigny, Que., upset 16th-seeded Na Li of China 6-4, 6-2 to become the first Quebec woman to win a match at the Rogers Cup tennis tournament in 22 years.
Pelletier pounced on numerous errors by Li, breaking service three times in the first set and twice more in the second for her first-ever win at the $1.34-million US hardcourt event.
The last Quebec woman to win at the Canadian event was Helene Pelletier, who beat Elizabeth Smylie of Australia in 1984 in Montreal.
