OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Fire experts, including arson investigators, will comb through the rubble of a deadly fire in Oakland, California. Officials say at least nine people died in last night's blaze in a converted warehouse, but they fear as many as 40 may have perished. They say 50 to 100 people are thought to have been in the cluttered building, which didn't have a clear exit path. Alameda County Sheriff's Sgt. Ray Kelly says the site isn't considered a crime scene, but fire investigations must start out looking at worst-case scenarios.

SANTIAGO, Cuba (AP) — Fidel Castro's remains have ended a four-day journey across Cuba. His ashes have arrived in the eastern city of Santiago, where they will be interred tomorrow. Huge crowds have been lining roads and shouting Castro's name as the funeral procession made its way to Santiago from Havana. The 90-year-old former president will be remembered in a nationally televised service this evening led by his brother, President Raul Castro.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Vice President-elect Mike Pence is urging Louisiana voters to back Republican John Kennedy for Louisiana's open U.S. Senate seat. He says Kennedy would be a strong partner to advance Donald Trump's agenda in Congress. Pence headlined a New Orleans rally and a fundraiser for Kennedy today. Kennedy, Louisiana's state treasurer, faces Democrat Foster Campbell, a state utility regulator, in next Saturday's runoff for the nation's last undecided Senate seat.

LAWRENCE, Mass. (AP) — A 16-year-old Massachusetts boy has been arrested in the killing of a classmate. The decapitated body of 16-year-old Lee Manuel Viloria-Paulino was found Thursday by a woman walking her dog near the Merrimack River in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett said Mathew Borges was arrested this morning and charged as an adult with first-degree murder. The two boys attended Lawrence High School.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A possible explosion at a power substation has sent waves of white foam billowing into the streets of downtown Philadelphia. Deputy Fire Chief Gary Loesch (LOWSH) says the wind this afternoon whipped the foam into 5-foot peaks in places. He says it's not yet clear if a transformer exploded or something else caused it. No one was injured, but the Philadelphia Fire Department rescued eight to 10 people stuck in elevators because of a power outage. Loesch says the fire-suppression foam isn't toxic to the environment. It's being washed into the sewer system.
