ZILLERTAL, Austria (AP) — World championships silver medalist Fritz Dopfer's season is over after the German skier broke his left leg in a training crash.
The German ski federation says Dopfer underwent surgery on Sunday hours after fracturing his tibia and fibula bones in Zillertal.
The 29-year-old Dopfer, who took slalom silver at the 2015 worlds in Colorado, will miss the next worlds in February in St. Moritz, Switzerland.
Dopfer says his focus is returning "to be competitive again in the Olympic season."
At the 2014 Sochi Olympics, he missed a bronze medal by .05 seconds in a tie for fourth place.
Dopfer has six runner-up finishes in World Cup slalom or giant slalom races but never won. He placed eighth in the season-opening slalom in Levi, Finland.
