ALGIERS, Algeria (AP) — An Algerian highway collapse has created a sinkhole that swallowed several cars, injuring 11 people.
State news agency APS reported Saturday that five cars fell into the sinkhole on the Ben Akoun highway west of the capital Algiers on Friday night.
Emergency services spokesman Nassim Bernaoui was quoted by APS as saying that six of the injured people had to be hospitalized.
Authorities worked Saturday to fix the highway after the collapse, reportedly linked to an outdated sewage system beneath the road.
Images of the scene showed a hole nearly the width of the road and deep enough to hold a car.
