NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump's transition team is dismissing reports of internal turmoil created in the transition effort by infighting and power grabs. President-elect Donald Trump has weeks to set up his White House, national security and economic teams. He tweeted Wednesday that the enormous effort is proceeding "so smoothly."

WASHINGTON (AP) — The new Senate minority leader is vowing a "strong and tough fight" with Donald Trump on issues where they disagree -- but Chuck Schumer is also pledging to work together with Trump when that's possible. Senate Democrats have chosen Schumer to hold the Democrats' most powerful post in a Republican-dominated government. Senate Republicans chose Kentucky's Mitch McConnell.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Just over a week after her shocking election defeat, Hillary Clinton is encouraging supporters to "stay engaged." Clinton spoke Wednesday night in Washington at the annual gala for the Children's Defense Fund, where her legal career started. Clinton never cited the president-elect by name in her remarks, making only a reference to the controversial policies that fueled his rise to the White House.

CANTON, Ill. (AP) — Authorities say one person, a utility worker, was killed and others were injured in a gas explosion in the central Illinois community of Canton. It's about 30 miles southwest of Peoria. Eleven people were transported for treatment. Officials say the Wednesday evening explosion occurred near the downtown square and damaged several buildings.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — One person says it sounded like thunder. An Air Force explosives team has set off a World War II-era bomb tonight in Tallahassee, Florida. It was unearthed at a construction site near the Florida State University campus by a construction crew that notified police. A bomb squad inspector checked it out using binoculars and called the military.
