CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — The Ames Monument in Albany County has been designated a national historic landmark.
The Wyoming News Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/2etIxyn ) that the pyramid-shaped structure located along a former route of the Transcontinental Railroad was one of 10 properties nationwide given the designation. The sites were announced Wednesday by the U.S. Department of the Interior.
Federal officials say the new landmarks represent important parts of the country's "diverse heritage."
The Ames Monument is meant to honor the Ames brothers in the creation of the railroad.
It was nominated for a historic landmark designation by the Wyoming Historic Preservation Office in an effort to preserve another work by architect Henry Hobson Richardson. The office says Richardson has 19 other structures in the eastern U.S. that are already historic landmarks.
