Aug. 11--It may not be the most welcomed trend for some women, but skinny jeans are topping the musthave list for fall fashion.
"Skinny jeans and leggings are the two biggest trends for fall," said Suzanne Bishop, owner of Frankie & Julian's boutique on Frazier Avenue. "But not all women will be comfortable wearing them."
Ms. Bishop counts herself as one who won't wear the fashion.
"I wouldn't recommend them to women over a size 8," she said. "I, personally, won't go near them because I have fuller legs. Skinny jeans are flattering on people who are tall, thin and leggy. It's a hard look to pull off for women with fuller hips and shorter legs, but it can be done."
Women of larger sizes can pair the skinny jeans or leggings with long tunics, oversized sweaters or dresses, Ms. Bishop said. "The long and bigger tops will cover parts of the body you necessarily wouldn't want to show off."
Ms. Bishop recommends wearing either ballet flats or riding boots to complete the outfit. "Ballet flats and riding boots are huge for fall, and they're also very comfortable."
"The skinny jeans (and) leggings are reminiscent of the cigarette pant that was popular in the 1950s," she said.
According to www.retailwire.com, Kai Clarke, president of Compact Power Systems, says fashionconscious women will buy into this trend "just like others."
"It does not flatter some body types, but that hasn't stopped fashion in the past," she said.
"How many women wore stretch pants, despite every glaring bulge and pound that they showed off?
Tight-fitting jeans have been in style before, and everyone offered them. The same trend will continue this time around as the fashion wheel turns."
Slim pants come in at No. 6 on Parisian's Top 10 essential items for fall 2006. "Slim jeans, leggings and straight leg pants prove to be the perfect new fall shape," according to a news release.
Dillard's sales manager Kristen Slusne said skinny jeans are geared mostly toward younger women.
"In most style magazines, it's the young professionals who are wearing them," she said. "And so are the celebrities."
Ms. Slusne said the jeans are popular in darker washes including gray, black and blue.
They're also "cleaner" than last year's look because the embellishments are gone," Ms. Bishop said.
