When the Triad Center in downtown Salt Lake City first opened, it was much different than it is today. There was a great deal of high-end retail operations and several restaurants in the buildings. The amphitheater was a site for Broadway type musical productions in the summer and the ice skating rink was very popular in the winter.
Well, now the buildings are very successful but house only offices. Most of the restaurants are also gone. There used to be a popular restaurant and private club called "Vicious Rumors" located in the carriage house of the Deveraux Mansion.
Well, that space is now open as the Carriage Café, under the direction of Scott and Jan Gatrell, with their son Tory as the manager. They bring to the operation more than 32 years of experience in the food business.
I visited with Jan over a giant ham and cheese sandwich on the best bread I have ever tasted. I was told that all of the bread and pastries are made fresh daily by a sister-in-law who formerly was the pastry chef at the Lion House and the Alta Club.
The café is open for breakfast and lunch, and service is quick. Lunch is a special treat. It was fun to order. When you first walk in, there are clipboards with descriptions of the various sandwiches, salads and soups available. You circle the items you want and hand in your order at the counter. You find a seat and table, and soon, the stacked-high sandwich is in front of you with the best potato chips and a giant dill pickle wedge. You choose your own type of bread, meat, fillings and types of cheese.
An added bonus is the semi private upstairs room that can be reserved for business meetings and luncheons or private parties. With the Delta Center Trax stop almost at the front door, the Carriage Café is a convenient lunch stop for anyone downtown.
There is a bit of whimsy printed on the bottom of the menu. It says, "If you don't see what you want. Just ask. If we can't make it ... we won't!"
