New York earned home-field advantage for this game by having won the season series between the teams. Madison Bumgarner is toeing the rubber for the Giants against Noah Syndergaard (SIHN'-dur-gahrd).
TORONTO (AP) — The Blue Jays advanced to the second round of the playoffs with a 5-2, 11-inning win over Baltimore last night. Edwin Encarnacion (ehn-kar-nah-see-OHN') won the game with a three-run walk-off home run. The Jays will now face the Rangers in an American League Division series.
LONDON (AP) — Heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury has told Rolling Stone magazine that he suffers from manic depression and has been bingeing on alcohol and cocaine to deal with it. Fury won the WBA, WBO and IBF heavyweight titles from Wladimir Klitschko (VLAD'-uh-meer KLICH'-koh) last November. A rematch with Klitschko was postponed for a second time last month after Fury was declared "medically unfit."
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The NBA's No. 1 overall pick, Ben Simmons of the 76ers, has had surgery to repair a broken bone in his right foot. No timetable for his return has been set. Simmons fractured the fifth metatarsal bone during the 76ers' final training camp scrimmage last week.
NEW YORK (AP) — Major League Baseball's average attendance dropped 1.1 percent this season. The 30 teams combined to draw just over 73-million fans with an average per game of 30,169. The Dodgers led in home attendance at 3.7 million followed by St. Louis and then Toronto.
