WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is headed for his home town of Chicago this weekend to raise some cash for Hillary Clinton's campaign and for Democrats in the U.S. House. Obama will attend a Sunday campaign event for Democratic Rep. Tammy Duckworth, who's challenging Republican Sen. Mark Kirk.
SHEPHERDSVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A Kentucky Republican who posted images on Facebook depicting President Barack Obama has a monkey is declining to apologize. And Dan Johnson, a Louisville-area preacher running for a state representative seat, is also defying GOP calls for him to drop out of the race. The Republican Party of Kentucky says Johnson's posts "represent the rankest sort of prejudice present in our society."
PETIT-GOAVE, Haiti (AP) — The United Nation's deputy special representative for Haiti says Hurricane Matthew has created destruction that is the "largest humanitarian event" in Haiti since the devastating earthquake of January 2010. The Category 4 storm struck Haiti before dawn. At least 10,000 people are in shelters and hospitals were overflowing. There's also a lack of potable water. In the U.S., some coastal residents from the Carolina's to southeastern Florida are preparing just in case. Forecasters say Matthew could hit Florida toward the end of the week and push its way up the East Coast over the weekend.
HOBOKEN, N.J. (AP) — A U.S. official says investigators estimate a commuter train was traveling 20 to 30 miles an hour when it slammed into a New Jersey rail terminal last week. The speed limit was 10 mph. The official says federal investigators are basing the speed estimate on the extent of damage caused by the crash, which killed a woman and injured more than 100 people.
